Being a supporter of Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’d certainly very much like to see him star in a proper sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Now, you can argue semantics all you want about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice being the followup, but what I yearn for is a solo flick centered on Big Blue.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Last Son of Krypton will be put on the backburner for the time being, as Warner Bros. have instead opted to pursue a picture focusing on his cousin, Supergirl. This may seem confusing because another iteration of the character currently headlines a prime time series on The CW, but I can understand why the studio wants more female representation in their comic book movies, given the immense popularity of Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn.
Naturally, the Maiden of Might needs a foe to fight, and word on the street has placed Brainiac as being the chief antagonist in the piece. For those thinking the Collector of Worlds is long overdue for his silver screen debut, you should be happy to hear that a report put together by Cosmic Book News assures that, yes, chatter surrounding him continues to this day. As such, we’d say he’s the guy to place your bets on as the gears begin turning in Burbank.
What’s also worth mentioning is that the report once again brought up how the film may take place while the titular hero’s still a teenager, forcing us to recall rumors of a 1970’s setting. If so, this could allow for the narrative to work around the already established continuity of the DC Extended Universe. But if you were to ask me what I think, this could be in an effort to craft a standalone product similar to Todd Phillips’ Joker.
Right now, there’s no release date assigned to Supergirl, but I’d say 2021 could be a real possibility if the ball gets rolling soon. If not, then maybe 2022 is a safer bet. As always, watch this space for more.
