A few days ago, actor Dominic Monaghan claimed via Instagram that director J.J. Abrams is the only one who knows the official title of Star Wars: Episode IX, making it harder than ever to buy into any of the growing number of rumored names that have been making the rounds online. Nonetheless, in the last couple of days, the forums have seen one more suggested subtitle emerge that’s managed to get a fair amount of attention for the optimism it represents.
The title in question is “Star Wars: A Light in the Dark,” and while we wouldn’t put any money on this being the real thing, the rumor has already got a few fans hoping that Abrams goes with something in this vein. At the very least, it seems like a fitting enough suggestion, given the darkness that the ending of The Last Jedi left the Star Wars galaxy in, as well as the glimmer of hope implied in the film’s final scene.
In any case, though the official title of The Last Jedi was unveiled on January 23rd on the year of its release, it’s looking less likely with each passing week that Episode IX is about to get the equivalent treatment, suggesting that Lucasfilm is operating on a very different schedule in promoting their next feature. At this rate, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that the title reveal was being saved for Star Wars Celebration in April, in which case, it may well be unveiled at the same time as the film’s first trailer.
Nonetheless, you can expect all the Star Wars: Episode IX hearsay and speculation to continue right up until the day the pic hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
