Because Marvel Studios are known for playing the long game, there remains the ongoing possibility that hints for the MCU’s future plans are just waiting to be discovered in the franchise’s previous releases. The unfortunate flipside to this, however, is that with twenty films’ worth of potential clues to look through, fans are practically guaranteed to find some ‘evidence’ to back up whatever theory is popular right now, such is the case with this alleged tease for the title of Avengers 4.
A rumor has recently been getting a lot of traction that the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will be called Avengers: Annihilation, and while this may possibly be the case, this recent find on Reddit isn’t exactly the most persuasive of clues. The post in question takes us back to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and includes a screenshot of Dr. Erskine, along with the following quote:
“Ladies and gentlemen, today we take not another step towards annihilation, but the first step on the path to peace.”
Did you catch that? He said ‘annihilation.’ Yeah, we’re not buying it either.
With ‘annihilation’ being a word in the English language and all, it’s not too surprising that it’s showed up more than once in the MCU’s ten-year history. A few days ago, for instance, a fan pointed out an ominous moment in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Scarlet Witch tells Vision, “I looked into your head and saw annihilation,” and to be fair, at least this moment is part of an Avengers movie and could easily be linked to the Mind Stone in Vision’s head.
In any case, with the first Avengers 4 trailer widely predicted to drop in the next month or so, surely the official title reveal can’t be too far away, right? Either way, one thing we can be pretty sure of is that the film will be hitting theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
