Testing for Gareth Edwards’ upcoming standalone Star Wars flick is now well underway and it’s being reported that the lead female role is being pursued by Rooney Mara, Felicity Jones and Tatiana Maslany. No details yet on which part the actresses are in contention for, but apparently Maslany and Mara are the frontrunners as Jones may be out of the running due to her commitments to Ron Howard’s Inferno.
Set to hit theatres on December 16th, 2015, Edwards’ entry into the franchise will shoot this Spring in London with a Simon Kinberg script (which was originally drafted by Gary Whitta, before he departed the project). As you can imagine, official plot details are non-existent, but reports have suggested that it will revolve around a group of bounty hunters tasked with stealing plans for the first Death Star. However, that is wholly unconfirmed at this time.
While we don’t know exactly what role this is, all three actresses are tremendous talents and would make great additions to a galaxy far, far away. My personal vote goes to Malsany though, who really needs to breakout on the silver screen after doing such fantastic work on TV’s Orphan Black.
