The upcoming Hellboy reboot was always going to have a tough time filling the void left by actor Ron Perlman and director Guillermo del Toro, and when the film’s first trailer dropped last month, fans by and large were left more skeptical than ever. What’s more, it seems that Perlman himself doesn’t have a whole lot nice to say about this divisive new teaser, with the actor recently taking to Instagram to throw some shade.
The former star of the series has previously gone on record expressing his disappointment that the old team behind 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army didn’t get to make a trilogy out of their take on the Dark Horse Comics character. And in a newly shared meme, the actor uses a line from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy to channel the discomfort of many a fan at seeing another version of Hellboy on our screens.
In the accompanying text, Perlman refuses to comment on the image, before immediately doing just that:
“I would never be so ungentlemanly as to comment on this. So…
NO COMMENT! (Although that shit’s funny AF)”
Taking over from Perlman in Neil Marshall’s next film is Stranger Things star David Harbour, who’s lately been doubling down on previous claims that the upcoming R-rated flick will be a “brutal” work akin to a horror movie, even claiming in a recent interview that his character will be seen chopping off heads and bathing in blood.
This description seems strangely at odds with the lightly comedic tone of the movie’s first trailer, but we’ll find out if it’s just a matter of misleading marketing when the new Hellboy hits theaters on April 12th, 2019.
