It’s been one success after another for Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and today, the film can add one more accomplishment to its resume. That’s because Gareth Edwards’ prequel has now entered the exclusive $1 billion club, sitting at a total of $1,011,301,563 at the worldwide box office after about roughly 40 days in theaters.
While not terribly surprising – the spinoff has been smashing through records for weeks now – it’s definitely exciting to hear. The studio took a big gamble on Rogue One and while rumors about extensive reshoots during the summer threatened to cast a shadow over it, the film was able to pull through and mark another huge win for the Star Wars franchise. Though it’s still miles away from The Force Awakens‘ massive $2 billion haul, this is no doubt an incredibly impressive figure and one that’s definitely got the studio smiling.
It’s not only Edwards’ effort that’s got Disney so happy though, as Moana also snagged another milestone this week, as the animated flick passed the $500 million mark at the global box office. With a fantastic female lead character and some refreshing changes to the usual Disney formula, it was a film that had everyone singing its praises and we’re thrilled to see that it’s done so well commercially
Circling back to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story though, the prequel isn’t likely to climb much higher at this point. It’s already beginning to make its exit from most theaters and Disney is now starting to shift the focus to Star Wars: Episode VIII, which arrives in December. It’s set to be another major hit for the studio, too, and with the galaxy far, far away seemingly making all the right moves lately, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us.
