Another day, another box office milestone for Rogue One to surpass – 18 days into its theatrical run, the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff has now officially surpassed $800 million worldwide.

In doing so, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story became the UK’s highest-grossing release of 2016 (£50.7 million), nipping the title from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the 11th hour. Meanwhile, Variety reports that the first of Disney’s planned anthology movies is now the seventh highest-grossing global release with $801.9 million, $440.9 million of which was pulled in through the domestic market.

Indeed, such a trailblazing run cements Rogue One‘s status as the second-highest grossing movie of the year, behind only Andrew Stanton’s animated sequel Finding Dory ($486 million). Even if Edwards’ acclaimed prequel doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – not that it was ever expected to – there’s still time for Rogue One to pip Finding Dory at the post and become the #1 film of the year.

Looking further afield, Star Wars fans can look forward to the release of Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII this December, while Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo anthology film is also in development – and may well have landed Woody Harrelson in the process. Meanwhile, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still playing in theaters across the galaxy, but do you believe Edwards’ actioner has the necessary mileage to muscle its way into Hollywood’s billion dollar club? Do let us know.
