Back when Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie hit theatres in 2014, it took everyone by surprise. People weren’t really expecting much from the animated flick, but $469 million and 217 fresh reviews on Rotten Tomatoes later, and the film quickly became the talk of the town. Sensing much potential for a full blown franchise, the studio immediately ordered up a sequel along with a couple of spinoffs.
Next up for the series will be The LEGO Batman Movie, featuring Will Arnett as the Caped Crusader after a scene stealing role in the original film. Set to bring us more gorgeous animation, laugh out loud gags and presumably, a story with a real sense of heart buried beneath its irreverent spirit, the spinoff is only about a month away now and as such, Warner Bros. has kicked the marketing machine into high gear.
From beautiful posters to amusing holiday promos, fans have certainly been spoiled over the past couple of weeks. Things don’t look to be changing any time soon, either, as the studio has just released a brand new 30-second promo which places the focus on Robin and his desire for a family, as well as Batman’s aversion to one.
Of course, the necessary humor is sprinkled in here as well, with quite a few laughs packed into the brief, yet amusing preview. There are also a few hints at the film exploring Batman’s past, which should be interesting to see. With The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on producing duties, and Chris McKay (an animation director on the original film) taking the helm, we’ve no doubt that the spinoff is in good hands and might just prove to be the best DC Comics adaptation of the year.
Can it possibly soar to the same heights that The LEGO Movie did? That remains to be seen, but we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it happens. After all, Batman is one of the most popular characters in any medium and with the only other current cinematic version of him being awfully different, this could prove to be exactly what fans are looking for after being repeatedly kicked down by the DCEU’s recent disappointments.
Co-starring Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis and Ralph Fiennes, The LEGO Batman Movie will swoop into theatres on February 10th, 2017.
