Half the universe died in Avengers: Infinity War, and here Robert Downey Jr. is cracking jokes about it.
This year’s Marvel mega-hit left the MCU in a pretty grim state, with half the characters turning to dust in Thanos’ purge of the population, but at least the Iron Man star is managing to see the funny side of things. A new Facebook post from the actor’s account takes the “I’ve got a jar of dirt” meme from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and combines it with a well-known passage of dialogue from 2012’s The Avengers to reference the fact that many of Tony Stark’s fellow heroes could probably fit in a jar these days.
The actor accompanied this cruelly comical image with the following text:
“I always love a joke that requires three different movies to understand it.”
We’d think he would, seeing how he’s about to feature in a film that requires twenty-one other movies to understand.
Speaking of which, though Thanos may be grinning now, it’s a safe bet that the tables will turn in next year’s Avengers 4, with most, if not all, of the dusted heroes expected to somehow make a comeback. Unfortunately, things may not turn out so well for Stark himself, with the character’s death remaining a popular prediction among the fans.
Either way, with the Avengers: Infinity War sequel set to bring Marvel’s Phase 3 to a close, it’s expected that the movie will be concluding the character arc of many a Phase 1 Avenger, and Tony’s fiancée Pepper Potts is certainly looking these days like she’d be ready to carry the torch should Iron Man retire from the action. That’s just speculation for now, but we’ll find out what kind of a future Avengers 4 leaves for the MCU when the film hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
