Resident Evil 6 has been announced for quite a while now, but we haven’t really heard anything about it in a really long time. Now, a recent interview with director Paul W.S Anderson has shed some light on a good chunk of information, including the film’s title, which will be Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
Personally, that sounds somewhat anti-climactic for a franchise that has used subtitles such as Extinction, Apocalypse, and various other bleak monikers signalling the end of mankind as we know it. We already know that this is going to be the last Resident Evil film, so the fact that it is now being spelled out is a bit deflating if you were hoping for another catchy apocalyptic title.
Anderson does mention that he is still only in the middle of writing the first draft for the script, and that nothing is final yet, including the title. Another noteworthy comment from the director confirms that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be shot with 3D cameras and intended to be a 3D experience, similar to the past few entries in the franchise.
I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process. You cannot make a great 3D movie by just—it’s not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on. You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top—it doesn’t work well like that. Yes, you can do a last minute conversion. You can shoot the movie thinking about 3D and do a last minute conversion and it can be a 3D movie, it’s just not gonna be a great 3D movie. I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know—because I’ve done so much of it—will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was originally slated for a September 2014 release, but will obviously not make that date anymore. It is unclear when production will begin, but as of right now, Anderson is roughly halfway through his first draft of the script, so it might be a while before we see this one.
As always, we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
