Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor roll back the years with today’s electrifying first trailer for Trainspotting 2, which not only sees the latter reprise the role of Scottish drug addict Mark Renton, but also features a modern spin on the iconic “Choose life” monologue.
“Choose life, choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere, cares.” Set against the pulsing house beats of Underworld’s “Born Slippy” and Wolf Alice’s “Silk,” this T2 teaser essentially rounds up the crew from the ’96 original before asking the question, just what on Earth have they been up to for the past 20 years?
[zergpaid]Adapted from Irvine Welsh’s literary sequel Porno, here we see Renton (McGregor), Spud (Ewan Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) stumble through another drug-induced saga of narcotic dream sequences and crime. If the cult original tackled themes of urban poverty and squalor in Edinburgh, Trainspotting 2 takes those foundations and wraps them in a mid-life crisis.
As rumored, Kelly Macdonald also returns as Diane, Renton’s long-time love interest and maybe – just maybe – his one shot at a normal life. Fans will also be pleased to hear that Carlyle’s Begbie hasn’t lost any of his anger issues in the past two decades.
T2: Trainspotting 2 will pull into UK theaters first on January 27. It’ll then make its way across the pond in time for February 3.
“Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.”
