Blade Runner 2049 notwithstanding, Thor: Ragnarok will be remembered as one of the best-looking movies of 2017.
Between them, writer-director Taika Waititi and Javier Aguirresarobe, the cinematographer tasked with bringing Sakaar’s technicolor vistas to life, created a wondrous space oddity for Thor’s third (and final?) solo adventure. And now, thanks to this new clip you’ll see up above, we can relive one of the film’s best moments – the fight between Hulk and the God of Thunder.
Those who’ve already seen Ragnarok, which we imagine is almost everyone at this point – given how much business it did at the box office – will be very familiar with this scene. For those who may have missed it in theaters, though, the clip sees Thor and Hulk pitted against one another in a gladiator arena. Though the God of Thunder is happy to come across “his friend from work,” his fellow Avenger isn’t too keen on catching up. Cue an epic battle.
There’s much to love about this moment, but really, it just encapsulates what worked so well about Ragnarok. On the one hand, it’s simply a great thrill to have a rematch between the two characters, with their fight being an exhilarating clash of the titans. The scene also finds room for Waititi’s trademark witticisms – everybody now: “He’s a friend from work!” And let’s not forget the hilarity happening on the sidelines, as Tom Hiddleston’s Loki grows ever more uncomfortable to be in Hulk’s presence, after their last encounter in The Avengers.
Also, special mention should go to the visuals in this scene. The director was very open about how the colourful, imaginative work of classic Marvel creator Jack Kirby influenced him and that’s no more obvious than in this part of the film. Unfortunately, the clip doesn’t let us see how the whole thing plays out, but it’s nice to be able to relive at least part of it and it should act as a great tease for those who haven’t yet seen the movie.
Sandwiched in between Black Panther and a little-known Marvel property called Avengers: Infinity War, Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is now scheduled to hit Blu-ray and DVD on March 6th – two weeks after its initial release on Digital HD – and we can’t wait to revisit this fight scene in full in just a few months’ time.
