Despite a bunch of bad buzz and poor word of mouth, fans seem to have enjoyed what they saw of RoboCop yesterday during the film’s panel at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Most people were quite surprised too, as everything we’ve heard about the film has been of the negative variety and I think critics had started to write the reboot off. Those in attendance were probably expecting something pretty rough so when the footage turned out to actually be alright, it probably caught most people off guard.
You can check out the reactions from the Twitterphere below. For the most part, it’s all pretty encouraging, though there are a few things that worry me. For one, the film is going for a PG-13 rating and considering that the original was a “hard R,” that’s pretty disappointing. There are also some changes to the story that may not go over well with fans, like the fact that in this version, Alex Murphy doesn’t die. Finally, there are of course a few people who are still quite cynical about the film.
Anyways, take a look for yourself below and see what you think.
The ROBOCOP footage looked absolutely fantastic! The storyline exploring man & machine wrestling w/ his own soul & humanity sounds powerful.

RoboCop footage looked solid, not as bad as I was expecting but not amazing either. Solid action, looks good, but still not convinced. #SDCC

RoboCop reboot footage doesn’t get an overly enthusiastic response but it looked ok. #SDCC #ComicCon2013 #HallH #RoboCop

I’ll admit: first bit of finished RoboCop footage didn’t look that bad at all. Actually looked quite good, but so did Total Recall at first.

Old ROBOCOP suit shown in Comic-Con trailer as first prototype.

Honestly, ROBOCOP footage isn’t mindblowing but it’s got potential. Definitely still has the satire feel, aiming at military drone usage.

In ROBOCOP, Alex Murphy doesn’t die. He’s merely dramatically, robotically enhanced after being fatally wounded.

The Middle East stuff was actually my favorite part, seeing the ED-209s in action securing the streets was interesting.

First footage from RoboCop borrows a whole lot from District 9 and Afghanistan Iron Man stuff in terms of visuals and tone.
— Eric Vespe (@EricVespe) July 20, 2013
The big clip that just played looks slick, but I get a sick feeling that it’s going to just be a more boring version of Verhoeven’s film.
— Eric Vespe (@EricVespe) July 20, 2013
I don’t think RoboCop looks like the trainwreck I expected, but I’m really worried about it just being flat and mediocre.

ROBOCOP footage is interesting, ends with a horrible delivery of “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me.”
— Devin Faraci (@devincf) July 20, 2013
ROBOCOP looks very different from the original. That makes me hopeful.

Alex doesn’t die in this version. That’s a huge change, in my opinion. #SDCC

‘We’re shooting this movie to be seen by as wide an audience as possible, which means PG13’ don’t expect excessive gore in Robocop #SDCC

RoboCop trailer makes it clear this is a different movie with an affinity for the original. Very distinct. Multiple suits. Gritty. #sdcc
