Can you believe it’s been a decade since the first Saw movie landed in theatres? In order to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the torturous franchise, the original film is hitting select cinemas once again on Halloween for a limited one week engagement. After all, the success of the series is certainly something worth celebrating! Between 2004 and 2010 a whopping seven films were released. Their continued box office success came down to fan demand, as audiences returned to multiplexes every year to witness the depraved antics of violent social commentator, Jigsaw. The question is, will the madman come out of retirement for one more game?
During an interview with ShockTillYouDrop, producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules discussed this very issue. Their comments point to the inevitable return of the franchise:
“James and Leigh… when Saw came out they were so afraid of being ‘the Saw guys’,” Koules said, “and they were trying to make their own mark. Now that they’ve made their own mark, they’re very comfortable to come back. We’re getting there. James and Leigh are absolutely going to put their mark on it.”
Who knows what form this purported return will take? It could emerge as a reboot, a remake, or another straight-up sequel. After the series ended with the seventh flick, the internet became a hot bed of chatter concerning an eighth instalment. So far, that talk has fizzled out as original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell have moved on to other projects. But it sounds like they’re definitely up for another round. As Koules went on to state, we might even see it as early as 2016!
“We kind of wanted to build it up. Our goal is to go to Comic-Con, not next summer but the summer after [2016] with our heads up saying, ‘Here we go.’ James and Leigh are comfortable with the success they’ve had. And it’s time. James is in post on his movie. Leigh’s on post on [Insidious Chapter 3]. Everyone has time and it’s time.”
If everyone’s schedules permit, we could be in store for another Saw movie in the near future. Well, if there’s a story worth telling, and according to James Wan, there absolutely is: “I’ve entertained the idea,” he told STYD. “But that’s more of a fantasy, I think. It’s a story Leigh and I really like and… who knows?”
There you have it. The pieces are aligned, the players are in place, now tell us; would you like to see another Saw?
