Shane Carruth will finally be following up his mind-bending 2004 time travel indie Primer with the equally intriguing looking Upstream Color. It was confirmed last week that Carruth’s new film would premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and an intriguing teaser trailer has now been released to whet your appetites. Carruth himself will play the lead role in the movie with Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensening and Thiago Martines also on board to appear.
The trailer was released yesterday and it’s every bit as tense and every bit as obscure as you would hope. Very little is known of the plot at present, with a small piece of blurb accompanying the video, informing us rather cryptically:
A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.
This tantalising little teaser is a dramatic and disconcerting insight into Carruth’s belated second offering and as you can no doubt gather, the director is keeping his cards very close to his chest. If you’ve seen Primer however, then it will be of no surprise to you that Carruth’s new movie appears at first glance to be both challenging and unconventional.
Part of the brilliance of Primer was that it didn’t spell everything out for you and forced you to piece things together for yourself and with Upstream Color I’m confident that a similar situation will arise. Carruth’s belated second outing is undoubtedly one to look out for in 2013.
