Shane Black’s The Predator focuses on a group of unsuspecting humans after the titular creatures invade their suburban neighborhood. But just why have these monsters come down to Earth, and what exactly do they want?
That’s a question for which we don’t have the answer to, but we will quite soon, as the film will certainly address it. Speaking to Pop Culture, Jake Busey, who stars in the pic as the son of the character his father played in Predator 2, revealed that the sequel will explain more about the Predator species and why they frequently revisit our planet.
“This one definitely falls in line with the original franchise in that it does focus on the technology that the Predators have,” Busey told the site. “It focuses on what the goal of the Predators is, and what their modus operandi, and why they come to the planet, and that type of thing. It’s definitely in line with the original franchise.”
Pop Culture also tells us that Busey explained where on the timeline this upcoming pic falls, saying;
Jake said the new film is set after the second one. Predator 2 was released in 1990, but took place in a 1997 Los Angeles ravaged by gang violence. The third movie, 2010’s Predators, took place on another world and wasn’t set in a specific year. So, The Predator will take place between those two movies.
From the sounds of it, the movie will take some big steps forward with the franchise and push the lore into new directions. Let’s just hope it’s for the best and doesn’t get forgotten like the attempts at expansion in the 2010 effort. After all, how many disconnected sequels and one-offs does this series really need?
“You’ll never see him coming.” Once scheduled for a release in February of 2018, when Shane Black’s R-rated reboot would’ve faced strong competition from Black Panther, The Predator has since relocated to August 3rd, 2018, which means you can expect to learn more about it very soon.
