A new photo from the upcoming Power Rangers movie shows the gang’s main foe singling one of them out for some special treatment. The picture, released by Entertainment Weekly, depicts the villainous Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) stroking her gnarly talons down the face of the Yellow Ranger, Trini. She doesn’t look too happy about her predicament. But, as actress Becky Gomez went on to tell EW, that’s because Repulsa believes she’s susceptible:
“Rita tries to make Trini feel like she’s the weakest link of the Power Rangers, and she feels it’s easiest to go for her,”Rita’s the type to play a lot of mind games, and Trini’s [thinking], ‘Can I really overpower Rita Repulsa or can I not?'”
After the somewhat mixed reception to the drastic makeover Repulsa has been given, folks are slowly warming to the new iteration. A large part of that is down to Banks’ popularity. It’s hard to not be intrigued by how she’s planning to deliver her first proper ‘bad guy’ performance.
Further in the interview with EW, Gomez adds that getting to film those action-packed confrontations with Banks was a lot of fun:
“When we did our blocking, our run through, Elizabeth and I really wanted and to make it fun, to make this scene as real as possible. Actually, I got to run through the wall a couple of times. I got thrown up against it and I got to break it myself. My stunt double of course was there, talking me through it, but I was really, really excited.
It was a bit intimidating for me because, you know, it’s Elizabeth [Banks]! I look up to her a lot as an actress, so getting to work one on one with her is really cool. I learned a lot, and there were moments when I had to hit her, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I hope I don’t actually hit her!’ She really let me be hands on in a lot of the fighting, so it was cool.”
With Comic-Con right around the corner, Gomez confirms that she and the entire team will take to the Hall H stage. Fingers crossed, we may get our first glimpse at footage. Perhaps a little of the fight teased by Gomez? We’ll find out soon enough.
Fleshing out the main bulk of its leading cast with a series of relative unknowns, Power Rangers also stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, and R.J. Cyler. Oh, and Bryan Cranston, too. You can meet the team in all their lycra glory when the movie opens on March 24, 2017, or beforehand with the new character posters below.
