A gleaming yellow brick road, that telltale hot air balloon, and the shining Emerald city are the familiar sights in Disney’s new poster for Oz: The Great and Powerful. The teaser one-sheet for their Oz prequel depicts a fantastical, storybook sight that raises plenty of speculation for the mysterious project.
Directed by Sam Raimi, James Franco portrays a younger, morally ambiguous Oscar Diggs (the man who would be Wizard) and his initial foray into the Land of Oz.
It’s hard to imagine a Wizard of Oz prequel that will be on par with the critically renowned Wicked, but my heart isn’t tin for Disney’s Oz just yet. If one examines the poster, multiple tornadoes are shown. This hints that Dorothy’s peculiar method of transportation into the Land of Oz could be explained.
The sweeping landscape also reminds me of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland aesthetic. Since both films come from the same company and incorporate classic tales, the similarity does bode well. Oz will hopefully carry all of its predecessor’s pros and none of its downfalls.
Besides, this is Oz we’re talking about. The possibility of flying monkeys and encountering the Lollipop Guild is an instant win in my book.
Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful arrives in theatres March 8, 2013.
