Avengers: Infinity War is the beginning of the end for this era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos first appeared in The Avengers‘ mid-credits scene and has since shown up in the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron, as Marvel used those and other movies to tease his eventual clash with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, based on a new report, that encounter may not play out as some fans expected.
Rather than adapting the Infinity War storyline that the movie is named after, it’s said that it will actually be based on Infinity Gauntlet. That story featured the Mad Titan using the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe in the hope of winning the affections of his one true love, Death. It’s something along those lines that we’ll apparently end up seeing in Avengers: Infinity War, and speculation is pointing to Death being Cate Blanchett’s Hela from Thor: Ragnarok.
Death and Hela are two different characters in the comic books, but it’s entirely possible that Marvel Studios will merge them here to simplify things. It also makes an awful lot of sense to make them one and the same, especially as Blanchett would be an amazing addition to Avengers: Infinity War and would help tie it further into Thor’s next adventure.
All of this should be taken with a pinch of salt for now, of course, but at this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Avengers: Infinity War sequel titled Infinity Gauntlet.
