Warning: Minor spoilers for Scream 6 to follow.
On the surface, the Scream franchise has absolutely no business being as consistent as it is; horror franchises have a tendency to run out of steam just by the product’s very nature, and Scream has the added hurdle of somehow reinventing its meta-centric formula without dipping into tired practices. And yet, somehow, someway, the series has managed to reach six movies with arguably only one hiccup in the form of Scream 3.
And with Scream VI being one of the strongest entries yet, the future is looking brighter than ever for Ghostface, and we’d be in for the shock of a lifetime if the franchise ended here. With respect to that, the eager creatives of r/horror have taken to dreaming up the plotlines and subversions they hope to see in Scream 7.
One user rather cynically crossed their fingers for the shedding of plot armor. An admittedly valid hope, especially considering the events of the last film, but we can’t say we hate the way that the franchise has handled such a common gripe in the horror world.
Others hoped for Mindy’s death in the next film, viewing her survival in Scream VI as a missed opportunity to pay homage to her uncle Randy, who died in his second appearance in the series and who passed the “walking exposition” torch over to Mindy when she first appeared in Scream 5. Of course, given that Randy’s death had a hand in the following downgrade that was Scream 3, keeping Mindy alive in Scream VI at least was probably the right call.
A few other responders suspected that the Carpenters and co. might find themselves facing a whole cult of Ghostfaces before long; Scream VII: Legion has a pretty nice ring to it.
And a few more commenters, including the original poster, were in the camp of Sam fully embracing her status as the daughter of a serial killer and giving into her murderous side for better or worse.
Whatever you think of the Scream franchise as a whole, one has to give credit where credit is due; few films really understand how to field meta-commentary the way this series is able to time and again, and whatever Scream 7 happens to cook up, we’ll happily tune in with healthy expectations.
