With just a few days away from its release date, Tommy Wirkola’s dark fairytale, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, provides new images to entice viewers. The twelve photos offer an interesting look at the movie’s title characters played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, and their antagonist, Muriel, portrayed by Famke Janssen.
It seems the movie industry has taken to reenacting fairytales and adapting them with a darker take, with movies like Red Riding Hood and Snow White and the Huntsman gracing theaters over the past few years. I’m not sure which fairytale movie may come out next, but we do have something to look forward to this January with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Wirkola’s fairytale adaptation is an action-horror flick, which tells the story of two young siblings who grow up to become witch hunters after their past traumatic experience with an evil sorceress. Despite the fact that the movie’s trailer promises violence, gun power, gore and lots of explosions, I’m not entirely sure of its success in theaters. The movie seems plagued with action movie tropes and it may be reminiscent of Van Helsing. However, I will hold off my judgment until I’ve seen it. It may just have enough action to be entertaining.
From the pictures, Famke Janssen looks like a beautiful, evil sorceress. Although, she may have a hard time convincing us of her evil nature with her charming smile from these photos. Then again, Janssen may just be one of those pernicious villains.
Whatever the case, Renner and Arterton seem equal and dedicated to the task of eliminating Muriel and her coven. You can watch the two actors show off their guns and blow some witches’ heads off on January 25th, 2013.
However, before that, we’ve got some pictures from Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters that can feed your appetite until the film hits theatres.
