Deadline is reporting that esteemed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is joining Daniel Espinosa’s Child 44, an adaptation of the Tom Rob Smith novel of the same name.

Produced by Ridley Scott, the film will follow a “disgraced MGB agent in the 1950s Soviet Union investigating a prolific child murderer who may have connections going to the very top of the party leadership.” No word yet on which role Hoffman will take but we’ll let you know when we hear more.

The actor joins an already jaw-dropping cast that includes Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, Paddy Considine and Fares Fares. Pretty impressive, right?

While I wasn’t exactly a fan of Espinosa’s last film, Safe House, I must say that I’m quite excited for Child 44. With that cast, how could you not be excited? It’s one of the best line-ups that I’ve seen in recent memory and with the amount of talent on board here, I don’t see how the film could turn out to be anything less than fantastic. Unless of course Espinosa completely drops the ball, like he did with the aforementioned Safe House.

Still, no matter how good, or bad, of a job he does, the film will no doubt sport some great performances from some of the best actors currently working in Hollywood. For that reason alone it will be worth a watch.

An exact release date hasn’t been pinpointed just yet but with production already underway, we can expect the film to drop at some point in 2014. When we get something more concrete we’ll let you know.

In the meantime, tell us, are you excited for Child 44? Are you happy to see Philip Seymour Hoffman joining? Let us know in the comments below.
