Anthony Mackie doesn’t have a reputation for spilling Marvel’s secrets left, right, and center like Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, but the Sam Wilson star nonetheless is known for his free-speaking, unfiltered conversational style. That makes any interview with him a delight to watch, but in this case his honesty has only got us even more worried about the MCU Phase Five as he’s provided us with a concerning update about Captain America: New World Order.

While speaking to Josh Horowitz ahead of the release of his new Netflix movie, We Have a Ghost, Mackie was inevitably asked about his incoming first solo outing as our new Sentinel of Liberty. On the one hand, his promise that filming is set to begin as soon as this March sounds exciting. However, his subsequent admission that he hasn’t even seen a script for the film yet, despite the impending production start, is much more alarming.

“Yeah, that’s in March,” Mackie revealed, confirming that Captain America 4 is his next gig. When asked for info on what we can expect, Mackie added, “You know what, I have not seen a script. I just think it’s a lotta flying.”

While this is certainly a little startling to hear, it should be said that Marvel has played fast and loose with its scripts before and gotten spectacular results — long-term fans will be aware that Iron Man was made off the back of a broad-strokes screenplay, with the cast improvising much of their own dialogue. Still, with the way Marvel’s last-minute reshoots on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania came back to bite them in a big way, it would definitely put folks at ease if Cap 4 was a much tighter ship.

Captain America: New World Order is scheduled for release on May 3, 2024.
