More potential casting news comes to us today from /Film who reports that eight actors will be reading for the part of Tetsuo in the upcoming adaptation of the graphic novel Akira.

Casting choices and offers for this project have been rampant lately. We already know that Garrett Hedlund will be playing Kaneda and that Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter will be playing The Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively. We’ve also recently heard that Twilight star Kristen Stewart will be playing Kei.

The list of actors to read for the role of Tetsuo is as follows:

  • D.J. Cotrona (Detroit 1-8-7, G.I.Joe 2: Retaliation)
  • Logan Marshal Green (Devil, Prometheus)
  • Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, Control)
  • Richard Madden (Game of Thrones)
  • Rami Malek (The Pacific, Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2)
  • Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire)
  • Paul Dano (Cowboys & Aliens, There Will Be Blood)
  • Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro)

We already knew about Ehrenreich being considered for the role, which is being described as “the young man whose latent powers will release the powerful being known as Akira” and “a younger man with telekinetic abilities who becomes a dangerous weapon,” but these other names are new.

Arguably the most well-known actor on the list is Paul Dano, who gave a great, understated performance as Paul/Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood. He’s always an interesting screen presence, whether he’s silent for most of the film like in Little Miss Sunshine or hamming it up like in Cowboys & Aliens.

While I’ve seen some of the other projects from the other names on the list (some good, some bad), they aren’t exactly names that jump out at me, but at least there’s some variety.

Akira is being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) from a screenplay by Mark Fergus, Steve Kloves, Hawk Ostby, and Albert Torres. No release date has been set for the film yet.

Now that we have a more complete list of potential actors, who would you like to see take the role? Let us know in the comments.
