We’ve been hearing for a while now that The Conjuring 3 will serve as a departure from the standard haunted house formula of the first two flicks, with a report from a couple of months ago alleging that the film will instead be centered around a high-stakes legal case. And if you need further assurance that the horror threequel won’t be more of the same, star Patrick Wilson has recently doubled down on previous claims that the follow-up to 2016’s The Conjuring 2 won’t be quite like anything The Conjuring Universe has offered so far.
Speaking to Digital Spy, the star of the upcoming Aquaman first touched on his involvement in next year’s Annabelle 3, before indicating that we should expect the unexpected for his 2020 return to the series:
“We just finished Annabelle 3 which is cool. It’s nice to dip our toes into that franchise a little bit. Conjuring 3 will be different than anything we’ve seen, which is fun.”
The third Annabelle flick is said to focus on Ed and Lorraine Warren’s ten-year-old daughter Judy’s attempts to last through the night after evil spirits in the artifacts room are awakened. But while Wilson and Vera Farmiga look to be relegated to supporting roles in that picture, The Conjuring 3 will be the paranormal investigating pair’s proper comeback, as the Warrens look into the case of a man on trial for murder who claims he was possessed by a demon.
Conjuring Universe producer Peter Safran has previously gone on record stating the team’s intentions to maintain a consistent tone between films, but here’s hoping that The Conjuring 3 still makes the best of its fresh angle when it hits theaters on September 11th, 2020. In the meantime, Annabelle 3 will be showing us what a horror version of Night at the Museum looks like when it comes out on July 3rd, 2019.
