Oscar Winner Rachel Weisz May Be Coming To Oz

I am a huge fan of The Wizard of Oz. It’s just one of those movies that is not only a timeless classic, but it is also one that I grew up watching and really love. It is this fact that makes me slightly skeptical that a prequel is being made. I admit, I found the Broadway prequel, Wicked, to be somewhat enjoyable and I know a film version is currently in the works, but I always feel like some of these things are just unnecessary and take away from the magic of the original.

The “slightly” part comes into effect because of who is involved with the upcoming prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, which will be told from the Wizard’s point of view telling the story of how he arrived in Oz and became the ruler. Not only is Sam Raimi directing this new Disney flick, but two of the most talented young actors in Hollywood are signed on for two of the starring roles: James Franco in the title role of Oz and Mila Kunis as Theodora, more commonly known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Also, according to Deadline, another talented actress is in talks to come to Oz, Rachel Weisz who would play Evanora, the meaner, older witch sister of Theodora. I personally, think that if this film works, Oscar winner Weisz would be a wonderful addition to the Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire written film. She’d fit in real nice with Kunis and Franco and I’m excited to see who they bring on board next.

Production for Oz: The Great and Powerful is slated to begin this summer and is aimed for a 2013 release.
