No sooner has The Curse of La Llorona completed its first weekend in theaters than the official logo for The Conjuring 3 emerges online, teasing the third installment in the flagship series of the Conjuring Universe.
As you can see, the new artwork give off the usual moody vibe that we’ve come to associate with the franchise, while also suggesting a rural setting for the upcoming flick. According to producer James Wan, the film will move away from the haunted house formula of the first two Conjuring movies to tell the story of a man on trial for murder who uses demonic possession as a defense. The premise is said to be based on a case file from paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who’ll be played once more by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively.
Taking over from Wan on directing duties is Curse of La Llorona helmsman Michael Chaves, whose new feature managed to top the box office on Easter weekend despite being slammed by critics. Next on the agenda for the Conjuring Universe is Annabelle Comes Home, which will also see the return of Ed and Lorraine, though the spotlight is set to be on their daughter Judy, played by Mckenna Grace.
The third Annabelle is scheduled to hit theaters on June 28th, by which point, production should’ve already begun for The Conjuring 3. For what it’s worth, Farmiga recently claimed that the film is going to be “massive” and “a doozy,” but we’ll find out if the movie can live up to the hype when it comes out on September 11th, 2020. After that, it’s unclear what’s next for the cinematic universe, though a sequel to The Nun might be a pretty good guess.
