Turns out The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson isn’t all that interested in directing the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff. And can you really blame him?
Fresh off helming one of the most controversial Star Wars movies, well, ever, Johnson has agreed to spearhead an entirely new trilogy for Lucasfilm, which will presumably help shape the post-Skywalker era. Details are few and far between, as the writer-director is still in the process of formulating his vision – turns out Lucasfilm actually issued the go-ahead on his trilogy before a story was in place, which should give you some idea as to how early on in the process Rian Johnson really is.
It’s for that reason that the filmmaker has no desire to helm Kenobi: A Star Wars Story (tentative title), as he’s simply too busy mapping out the future of Star Wars beyond Episode IX.
In seeing it? Sure, I’ll watch that movie in a heartbeat. No. Right now, I’m just focused on the new trilogy. Isn’t that enough? God, man, I’d love to see that movie.
Those comments came during Collider and IMAX’s 60-minute interview with Rian Johnson, who spent time fielding all sorts of questions and curious queries about his Star Wars sequel.
Truth be told, the director has been pretty forthcoming about The Last Jedi, including Rey’s parentage, the Crait finale, and Finn and Poe’s canned trip to Canto Bight – turns out the best damn pilot in the galaxy was originally supposed to accompany FN-2187 on his journey to find DJ, an expert hacker who would later help sabotage Snoke’s Supremacy.
There’s still reason to be excited, of course, as The Last Jedi‘s Blu-ray will seemingly come packing two hours’ worth of bonus content and deleted scenes. Rian Johnson, on the other hand, has been placed in control of an all-new Star Wars trilogy, and while he may not direct all three installments, we couldn’t be more excited.
