Stranded on a remote alien planet with no ship and no crew, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk, ever the one to laugh in the face of adversary, finds himself up against it in the first pair of Star Trek Beyond TV spots.

Checking in on the USS Enterprise crew approximately three years after the events of Into Darkness, Beyond looks set to put our band of spacefaring heroes through the wringer. As a matter of fact, Zoe Saldana – returning to the fray as Uhura – teased that next month’s sequel will test Kirk, Spock and Co. “at the craziest level,” with much of that animosity emanating from Idris Elba’s unhinged villain, Krall.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Guardians of the Galaxy actress also pointed to the way in which the core cast are now treated as unwanted fugitives.

“We’re tired, we need time off, we’ve been working non-stop, and it’s become like a machine where you kind of forget about yourself, but you need to go back home and nurture yourself and rest. Life has a different journey for us, and instead of us having to go out and aid another population, another planet that has been the target of violence, we are the target, so this is very different. We are tested at the craziest level and not just our lives are tested, but our characters and our relationships are tested.”

Star Trek Beyond goes boldly where no one has gone before – right onto the enemy’s doorstep, it seems – when Justin Lin’s sci-fi actioner makes its debut on July 22.

After stopping off at Starbase Earhart, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.
