There are some directors whom I’m always willing to give the benefit of the doubt: Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, Guillermo del Toro, Werner Herzog … and Pedro Almodovar. The Spanish filmmaker tends to vary the tone of his films, from the darker than dark films like Matador and The Skin I Live In, to the color-saturated comedies like Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown or Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down. Based on the new trailer, Almodovar’s latest film I’m So Excited looks like it’s one of the latter.
I’m So Excited is an ensemble piece set against a plane accident as various characters – stewards, stewardesses, passengers, and pilots – begin to confess their innermost secrets. But the new Spanish-language trailer makes it look much lighter than it sounds, with characters joining the Mile-High Club, stewards dancing to the titular song, and even cameos from old Almodovar staples Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.
Now, I don’t speak Spanish, so I have no idea what the characters are saying to each other, but it’s a good sign that the I’m So Excited trailer makes me really happy. I’m pleased to see Almodovar returning to his campier comedies, which always manage to be both intelligent and hilarious. I also admit that if this was anyone but Almodovar, I’d be suspicious – Gay stewards! That’s never been done before! But for Almodovar, I’m willing to take the risk. He’s never done an un-intelligent film, so this one should be no different.
I’m So Excited releases March 8 in Spain, and later this year in the USA by Sony Pictures Classics.
So what do you think? Does I’m So Excited look like a Spanish version of Airplane!, or does Almodovar have something more complex up his sleeve? Check out the Spanish language trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
