When was the last time an animated movie was genuinely fun for the whole family? It cannot just be fun for kids, it also needs to contain enough humour and pathos for teens and parents to enjoy it as well.
In this writer’s opinion, the last time such enormous entertainment could deliver to all ages was Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which came out last November. Well, audiences looking for that same manic energy, dazzling animation and of course, throwbacks to one’s own childhood that Wreck-it Ralph had in spades should probably check out The LEGO Movie when it hits theatres on February 7th. If the new trailer is any indication, the film will be packed to the brim with clever in-jokes and exciting action sequences.
The LEGO Movie follows Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), a LEGO minifigure who is recruited to stop an evil tyrant, the shrewdly named President Business (Will Ferrell), from taking over the LEGO world.
Joining Emmett on his quest is old mystic Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), tough girl Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Batman (Will Arnett). Also part of the voice cast is Charlie Day, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Liam Neeson, Jonah Hill, Cobie Smulders and Channing Tatum. Holy voice cast, Batman!
With such a vibrant voice ensemble, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller behind the lens, The LEGO Movie looks like an animated flick that can be a refreshing ride for teens and adults too.
Like Wreck-It Ralph, the trailer features cameos from licensed characters and familiar faces. Keep an eye out for Superman, Wonder Woman, one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Abraham Lincoln, as well as other figures well-known to those who play (or used to play with) the sets of construction toys.
