Nimona, the highly anticipated film adaptation of ND Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) graphic novel, is set to hit Netflix later this month, and while this delightful, genre-anarchist romp looks like an absolute blast, we can’t help but wonder if the streaming giant is going through something of an identity crisis; after being so ruthless with canceling many a beloved fantasy series, particularly the utterly queer Warrior Nun, the fact that it will be the sole host of Nimona, a sci-fi/fantasy film about a shapeshifting teenager whose source material has been the subject of many an academic study on queerness and identity, seems a little off-brand, so to speak.
We’re not complaining, though; with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse conquering the world like it is, now is as good a time as any for animated films to spread their wings like never before, and judging by this new trailer, Nimona looks all but ready to do so in a markedly literal manner.
Indeed, each and every frame of this delightful tease absolutely gushes with personality, and we have no doubt that complete newcomers and longtime Nimona lovers will fall in love with this intriguing world in the blink of an eye.
The film stars ChloĆ« Grace Moretz as the voice of Nimona, a teenager with the ability to shapeshift into a variety of different bodies and creatures, and who becomes the target of a knight’s assassination job. Things get complicated, however, when the knight realizes that Nimona may be the key to clearing his name when he gets accused of a crime.
Also shoring up the voice cast are Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, RuPaul, and Indya Moore.
Nimona will land on Netflix on June 30.
