New Mutants looks like it could have the potential to shine a light on some unusual corners of the X-Men universe. As it moves towards production, Fox and director Josh Boone are finalizing the casting of their gang of young mutants and they’ve picked an impressive array of young acting talent. So far, we’ve heard that 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga is to be playing Sunspot, that Game of Thrones alumnus Maisie Williams will be playing Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy will bring Magik to life, and just today, we got confirmation that Rosario Dawson will be playing Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
Now, we’re hearing that two young actors, The Originals Blu Hunt and Days of Our Lives True O’Brien, are being considered for the role of Mirage, a mutant with the power to create illusions of people’s fears or wishes. Of the two, some detective work by ComicBook.com makes the case that Hunt’s the more likely candidate due to her recently having followed the director and many of the confirmed cast on Twitter, which has proved to be one of the best (and most sneaky) ways to get advance casting knowledge.
As for the character of Mirage? She’s got such a fun mutant power that I can’t believe she hasn’t been in a film before. Being able to conjure up someone’s dreams or nightmares sounds like an exciting and visually dynamic element that’s sure to spice up any action scene. Plus, it fits in beautifully with what we’ve heard about New Mutants having a horror element to it.
New Mutants has been in development since 2015, though with this trickle of casting news, it seems that filming will commence fairly soon now ahead of its May 2018 release.
