Chris Evans’ Captain America has changed his look quite a few times over the past seven years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His stage costume from The First Avenger or the bright blue one from The Avengers have paid homage to the color scheme and the little head-wings seen in the comics, but what we haven’t got yet on the big screen is the distinctive scale armor that Rogers has traditionally worn on the page for nearly eight decades now.
That’s about to change in Avengers 4, though, as it seems that not only will Cap be reverting back to his clean-shaven, OG look come next year, but he’ll also be donning a new suit which harkens back to what we’ve seen in the source material, as it appears to be a revamped costume made from what looks like the aforementioned scale armor. Seeing as the Infinity War sequel is being pitched as the grand finale to the MCU as we know it, it makes sense for Marvel to give the fans something they’ve been asking for for a while now before things wrap up.
It’s taken a long time for Cap to get to this costume – 10 years and 20 films – but it’s great to see that it’s finally coming to the big screen. It also makes you wonder whether the scales themselves will have any sort of purpose in the film. MCU Exchange speculates that perhaps they have an “Infinity Stone blast-resistant quality to them,” though we’ll have to wait until May to find out for sure whether they serve any purpose beyond just looking damn cool.
The other thing that’s got people talking is whether Marvel’s finally giving Cap this armor now because Avengers 4 will mark Chris Evans’ last time in the role. Fans have long theorized that either Iron Man or Cap will perish in the upcoming blockbuster, as the death of a major Marvel hero would really signify the end of an era. Plus, Sebastian Stan’s been rumored to be taking over the shield for years.
Either way, we’ll find out more when Avengers 4 opens big on May 3rd, 2019, and after that, it’s fair to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will never be the same again – for better or worse. Whatever happens, though, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will stay together, win or lose, and march forward into Phase 4 of the MCU.
