The cast of Nicholas Stoller’s comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising continues to grow today, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that both Clara Mamet and rapper Nora Lum have boarded the film.
Incidentally, the former is best known for her recurring role on ABC’s sitcom The Neighbors, while Nora Lum – commonly referred to by her rapper pseudonym, Awkwafina – is primed to make her feature film debt with Sorority Rising. Universal’s starry follow-up has been drafting in new cast members left, right and center in recent weeks, with the addition of Chloë Grace Moretz followed in quick succession by Selena Gomez. Each actress will reportedly star as eccentric members of rivalling sororities, which will no doubt throw up all kinds of trouble for Seth Rogen and Zac Efron’s returning characters.
Universal will be looking at the bigger picture, though. After raking a box office haul to the tune of $269 million last year, Neighbors was one of 2014’s sleeper hits, leading to the studio fast-tracking development on the follow-up in question. One thing’s for sure: as a comedy sequel, Sorority Rising will be facing an uphill battle from the get-go to win over audiences. From the Hangover to Anchorman to the wholly unnecessary Horrible Bosses 2, the genre has left much to be desired in recent years, and we’re hoping Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising can buck the trend.
Script work on the sequel is currently being handled by Andrew Jay Cohen, Brendan O’Brien, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Dave Franco and Carlo Gallo are also back for the domestic comedy, while Kiersey Clemons and Beanie Feldstein join Mamet and Lum in the newcomers camp.
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising will aim to introduce a whole new brand of chaos when Nicholas Stoller’s sequel hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
