3) What We Do In The Shadows
I used to laugh at vampires because Twilight stripped away any dignity these bloodsuckers once had, but thanks to a slew of comical subgenre hits like What We Do In The Shadows, I’m once again laughing WITH vampires – not at them.
Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have created a mockumentary in the vein of Christopher Guest, exploring generational legends surrounding the vampire myth. There’s the old-school Nosferatu type, a Renaissance lover, and even a new-age Twilight dork who are all forced to live together. They argue over chores, go about their feeding habits, and get in scuffles with a rival gang of werewolves who are nothing but some mangey muts. Think of it as a genre-focused Real World, except way funnier and ten times smarter.
While there are currently talks of a sequel, What We Do In The Shadows stands alone as an uproarious genre satire worth its weight in gold. Vampires are still funny, but at least now its for the right reasons.
