With the full trailer booked in for Sunday, April 2nd, Universal has conjured up another sneak peek promo for The Mummy, Alex Kurtzman’s star-studded reboot that’s set to crack open a brave new world of gods and monsters (more on that later).

Headed up by Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), this modern re-imagining switches the gender of the titular deity to allow Sofia Boutella to take point as the Mummy. Once a princess short-listed to become a Pharoah in ancient times, Boutella’s character wound up summoning the wrong god altogether, and it’s stayed with her ever since, lurking beneath the surface ready to burst free at a moment’s notice. And that’s exactly what transpires in today’s fleeting new promo.

What follows is anarchy on a biblical scale, and it’s up to Cruise and Wallis’ characters to curb The Mummy‘s destructive reign before she jump-starts the end of days. One cast member that will prove to be an insightful ally is Dr. Jekyll, the enigmatic professor played by Russell Crowe. His part in Universal’s budding shared universe stretches beyond The Mummy, too, and we understand Jekyll will occupy a role similar to that of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other monstrous projects simmering in the works over at Universal include Frankenstein (Javier Bardem), the Invisible Man (Johnny Depp), and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The Mummy will be summoned into theaters on June 9th. On paper, it’s one of the riskier summer blockbusters lining Hollywood’s slate, but Kurtzman’s redo has star power in spades, so we’re intrigued to see how audiences take to his bold remaining.
