Welcome to another dream cast article, where we tell you who we would like to see in a film, rather than who the studio chose. We recently did a similar article about the cast of The Hunger Games sequel and if you like the idea, or have dream castings of your own, let us known in the comments.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo hits cinemas on December 21st, so we thought it would be a great time to provide you with an alternate cast for the film. Then over the next couple of weeks leading up to the release, we will also provide you with our dream casting for The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hortnets Nest.
Natalie Portman as Lisbeth Salander.
Why they should play the part?
Die hard fans on the Millenium Trilogy will know that when the American remake first came into discussion a poll was done in Sweden and Natalie Portman was voted as the country’s top choice of American actress to play Lisbeth Salander. After this occurred, she was actually offered the role, but unfortuantly had to turn it down.
Portman has shown numerous times that she has the acting ability to create a fantastic Lisbeth Salander, with her psychotic performance in Black Swan coming to mind. On top of this, she bares the physcial features, in height and build, needed to play the Swedish heroin. In my opinion, she’d make a perfect Lisabeth and it’s a real shame she didn’t take the role.
Viggo Mortensen as Mikael Blomkvist.
Why they should play the part?
Mortensen’s name was tossed around when casting began as well but nothing eventuated from it. Blomkvist is of course a jouralist, who also spent time in the military. The actor chosen for the role must be able to pull of the characteristics of a journalist like Blomkvist, while still having that Alpha male persona, which Mortensen could have done quite well. He also has some of the same physical features as Blomkvist, and his age though a little older, would fit well if Portman was Salander.
Max von Sydow as Henrick Vanger.
Why they should play the part?
Sydow was also said to be Fincher’s first choice for the role, however he declined the part. Sydow is the same age as Henrick and also holds the same screen presence needed to portray the character. Even as an old man he is some what intimidating and I can’t think of anyone that can pull that off better than the great Max von Sydow.
Vera Farmiga as Erika Berger.
Why they should play the part?
I don’t know about any one else who has read the books, but from the moment that Erika Berger was introduced in the novels I could not get the image of Vera Farmiga out of my head. The dialogue of Berger sounded like it came straight of Farmiga’s mouth, not to mention the obvious physical likeness.
Farmiga is a strong dominant presence, like Bereger. I think it would have been very interesting to see her tackle her relationship with Blomkvist, as a married woman, who is happy with her arrangement of having a man on the side that her husband knows about. Obviously that type of role needs an actress with a strong screen presence and Farmiga is perfect for it.
Stellan Skarsgard as Martin Vanger.
Why they should play the part?
This is the only casting of Fincher’s that I agree with 100%. Stellan is the perfect candidate for the role of Martin. He has a bit of a devious side and can portray both a likeablity and a strong hatred in one character at the same time.
It will be very interesting to see Skarsgard’s Martin Vanger, and from what we have seen from the trailer, it seems he has pulled it off perfecty. Oh ya, he’s also Swedish, which makes him even more well suited for the part.
Other casting choices that we wanted:
Gary Oldman as Dragan Armansky.
Famke Janssen as Cecilia Vanger.
Brendan Gleeson as Nils Bjurman.
Frank Langella as Holger Palmgren.
Christoph Waltz as Dirch Frode.
Maggie Siff as Annika Giannini.
Treat Williams as Detective Morrell.
