Marvel Studios is considering hiring director Patty Jenkins to helm the upcoming sequel to this spring’s hit superhero film Thor. Jenkins, who is best known for directing Charlize Theron in her Academy Award-winning role in Monster, would be taking on Thor 2 from the original film’s helmer, Kenneth Branagh.
/Film is reporting that Marvel has yet to confirm whether or not Jenkins has been hired but talks are ongoing, as Thor 2 is set to begin filming next April, and is scheduled to hit theaters by July 2013.
Marvel has also not yet confirmed what exactly the sequel will be about, but the studio’s president, Kevin Feige, said it will take Thor to other worlds.
The film will primarily be the journey of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins) is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds.
Thor and the Asgardian brethren recognize the Nine Worlds as the different planes of existence, of which Earth is one. The inclusion of the Nine Worlds is a push to expand the cosmic side of the Marvel Comics universe.
Tell us, what do you think of Jenkins’ possible hiring as Branagh’s replacement for Thor 2?
With her success with directing Monster and the pilot episode of AMC’s hit crime drama series The Killing, for which she was nominated for the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series Emmy this year, she seems like an excellent choice. Don’t you think?
