British director Gareth Edwards, who became well known for helming the sci-fi film Monsters, is now moving forward with the robot Star Wars project he first pitched last year. Edwards will work with producer Timur Bekmambetov on the movie, but not many details about the project have been released yet.
First Showing is reporting that the film, which has yet to receive a title, will follow a young human child, who’s approximately five years old, as he travels across the galaxy with a robot. The two are searching for mankind’s origin in a world void of humanity, which has been replaced with robots.
The reported budget for the film is $35 million. Of the budget, which is small for a sci-fi movie, Edwards said “It will require all my resources. The trick is to take the positive elements of having more money and the positive elements of having no money, and try to combine the two.” Edwards is still trying to figure out the details for the script, but it will reportedly be more ambitious than Monsters.
Edwards is moving forward with the film, as the script for his Godzilla project with Legendary Pictures is being revised by Batman and Superman writer David S. Goyer. The director also has time to work on the robot Star Wars film, as he won’t be helming the Monsters sequel; he’s only returning as an executive producer.
The robot film seems as though it will be a sure hit, given the success of Star Wars. While we wait for more plot details about the project, tell us, is this a movie you’d be interested in seeing? More importantly, what do you think of Edwards’ decision to pass on directing the Monsters sequel to helm the robot film?
