Mission: Impossible 5 is still slated for a Christmas Day release in 2015, but there seem to be a few bumps in the road. The original script, which was drafted by Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce, will now be going through a complete re-write by Will Staples.
Staples has been attached to various scripts in the past – some of which were associated A-list talent like James Cameron and Ben Affleck (King of Heists, Myth, World’s Most Wanted), but none of them ever came to fruition. Instead, Staples’ most successful project – and possibly what made him a candidate for the job in the first place – is penning the script for video game behemoth Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
As for Mission: Impossible 5, nothing about the plot is known at this time. That being said, it’s likely that all of the core cast members will be returning. We’re also hearing that Jessica Chastain might be joining them, though that hasn’t been confirmed just yet.
One last thing to note here is that Mission: Impossible 5 is set to open a week after Star Wars: Episode VII, one of the most hyped franchise sequels in cinema history. It will be interesting to see if Paramount holds onto that release date or not, as it’s probably not the smartest idea to go up against J.J. Abrams’ behemoth of a blockbuster, even if your film does star Tom Cruise.
