After pulling off a major box office coup, Deadpool is sitting atop the R-rated superhero world. And with Marvel gaining joint custody (sort of) of Spider-Man, it seems that there is now a shot that the two occasional teammates could work together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Studio-wise, Deadpool and Sony’s soon-to-be-rebooted Spider-Man: Homecoming, couldn’t be further apart. Yet, during a press conference for the release of Deadpool’s Blu-ray, director Tim Miller and producer Simon Kinberg spoke about the possibilities.
“Simon and I have been trying to build bridges. I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it,” Miller said.
Naturally, a Peter Parker-Wade Wilson team-up sounds too good to be true, and Kinberg clarified the inherent challenges due to studio incompatibility:
“I just don’t know if it would be possible.”
However, Miller and Kinberg still hold out hope that someday, somehow, the Merc with a Mouth and our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man could hang together. For good measure, Miller added:
“My favorite comic books in the old days used to be like DC vs. Marvel, Teen Titans vs. the X-Men or Teen Titans vs. New Mutants. Justice League vs. the Avengers. This could be something like that.”
For those who don’t know, these two superheroes have a long history together. Supposedly, Deadpool even came to life as a loose amalgamation of Spider-Man and DC’s Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke), hence Wade Wilson. The two also share a penchant for breaking the fourth wall and have collaborated on numerous adventures in the Marvel comics and animation universes.
Although the chasm between the Sony and Fox’s Marvel camps may be too steep to bridge, the crossover lingers as a tantalizing possibility. Kevin Feige has teased a few MCU cameos in the wall-crawler’s standalone film, and Kinberg is connected to both Fox and Marvel (through Star Wars: Rebels) and said he’d be open to an Avengers/X-Men reunion. So, with that in mind, would a pop-in from Deadpool be too much to ask? We sure hope not.
