If any character can lay claim to being one of the most popular comic book icons outside of anything published by Marvel and DC, it’s most assuredly Hellboy. Since first debuting on the printed page, the Dark Horse anti-hero has gone on to headline four movies – two live action and two animated – and was portrayed by Ron Perlman in every outing.
That said, it’s understandable if moviegoers became attached to that specific actor, but as is often the case in situations such as these, the time eventually comes when the torch must be passed – even if it’s to the chagrin of the old guard. Fortunately, though, David Harbour looks to be more than a great fit for the titular role.
So, regardless of which side of the fence you reside on, the reality of the situation is that change is on the way. On the plus side, we’ve been assured time and again that the new flick will be faithful to the comics, with the first banner circulating in advance of it (seen below) serving as a polite reminder.
Captioned with “The Blood Queen has risen,” this image comes to us via Milla Jovovich’s Instagram page, and we know that she’s playing that very character. Obviously, she’s stoked about the opportunity, showing off the ad sporting Mike Mignola’s artwork that’s hanging in Los Angeles.
On that note, we can’t help but recall Harbour’s positive words regarding Jovovich’s performance from a few months back:
“She’s super bad-ass! I watched some of her coverage, and I was like, ‘Damn, you know how to work a camera!’ There are people that understand the camera, and I’m not one of them. Man, she would do certain things and I would just be riveted and like, ‘Wow, you are so sexy and exciting and powerful and crazy! I don’t know how to do that. That’s amazing!’”
Hellboy opens in theaters on January 11, 2019.
