No way! Way!
In a world full of incredibly unnecessary sequels to delightful original films of the 80s and 90s, why not one more completely, embarassingly unnecessary sequel? And why not have it be by a once-funny comedian who has not made a decent film this millennium?
Yes, that’s right, The Playlist reports that Mike Myers has completed a first draft for a third Wayne’s World movie. The film will supposedly follow our favorite dingbats Wayne and Garth as they cope with a new era of music, internet and viral video, as well as marriages and … I just lost interest.
I think the phrase you’re looking for is ‘WTF?’ Or perhaps: ‘Please God, don’t let it be so.’ But definitely not ‘Excellent.’
There is little excellent about this news. The last film Mike Myers wrote was The Love Guru, recipient of three Razzies. He’s worked on and off, most notably on the Shrek films and an excellent cameo in Inglourious Basterds. But Myers seems to have lost his way as a comedian. I don’t think the way to find it is by a rehashing of his past glories.
This Wayne’s World sequel has yet to find a home, although if it does ever get past the draft stage Paramount will likely have possession of it. Myers has also been trying to get Austin Powers 4 off the ground for some time now. So there’s no guarantee that Wayne’s World 3 will ever see the light of day.
Which I’m just fine with. Wayne’s World remains a staple of my childhood and it’s still a very funny movie. So is Austin Powers, for that matter. But they are films of their times and, as we saw with the Austin Powers sequels, lost power and humor as they went along. I would love to see Mike Myers equal those films again; he’s just not going to do it by making unnecessary sequel after unnecessary sequel. It’s time to leave well enough alone.
