The Internet rumor mill cannot get enough of casting choices. The second an actor is even in the vicinity of film’s set, the rumors begin circulating that he or she is going to join the cast. This is certainly true of the latest casting rumor surrounding Terrence Malick’s latest film.
In a report from The Film Stage, Michael Fassbender may be joining the cast of Terrence Malick’s latest unnamed opus. A few Tweets and a blurry photo of Fassbender with Ryan Gosling on Malick’s set have given rise to the current flurry of Internet reports.
Although there seems to be no confirmation or denial forthcoming from Fassbender or Malick, based on the photo it seems that Fassbender is likely taking on a role. Then again, as he was filming Ridley Scott’s The Counselor nearby, he could have just been popping over to say hello and ask Gosling if he wanted to go get some sushi.
Malick’s latest already has quite the cast list, with Gosling, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale all likely stars in a story about intersecting love triangles and “sexual obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.” Adding Michael Fassbender to that mix would be welcome indeed.
Truthfully though, I’m more surprised by Malick’s sudden jump in production. For a filmmaker who tends to make a movie every nine years or so, he’s been very prolific lately. Following this year’s To the Wonder, both Knight of Cups with Bale and Portman, and Voyage of Time are in post-production, with this untitled project currently filming. If he keeps this up, Terrence Malick will rival Woody Allen for sheer number of films made each year.
Michael Fassbender has also been working at an alarming rate. With both The Counselor and Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years a Slave releasing next year, Fassbender is also set to appear in Lynne Ramsay’s Jane Got A Gun, alongside Natalie Portman.
As always, we’ll keep an eye on Malick’s latest as more rumors surface. This being a Malick film though, chances are that casting choices will remain largely rumors until closer to the release date.
