Amidst the recent news, speculation, and debate about the future of the MCU, you don’t hear the Ant-Man series get a whole lot of mentions, which is funny given the unusual place that the property currently holds in the Marvel franchise. While Scott Lang isn’t one of the Phase 1 heroes like Iron Man or Captain America who seem due for a send-off, he also isn’t among the more recent additions like Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange whose first sequels are still to come. And while the character’s films usually don’t generate as much enthusiasm as those of his peers, most fans would still be disappointed to see his journey come to a close with Avengers: Endgame.
Fortunately, it sounds like discussions on Ant-Man 3 have already begun at Marvel Studios, though the details right now couldn’t be vaguer. The issue was briefly touched upon by Michael Douglas during a recent visit from the Television Critics Association to the set of The Kominsky Method, and according to Entertainment Tonight, here’s what he had to say on the matter:
“There’s been talk [about another Ant-Man]… [but] there’s been nothing formal right now that I know of. They always kind of spring it on me. The first time you hear about it, it’s already in its third rewrite.”
In typical Marvel fashion, the cast is currently being kept in the dark, though it at least sounds like Hank Pym will probably be back for Scott Lang’s third standalone outing.
Though last year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp is often regarded as one of the less relevant entries in the overarching MCU narrative, Endgame may show Peyton Reed’s sequel to be more important than people think, particularly when it comes to how the film teases further activity in the Quantum Realm.
At the very least, the movie’s mid-credits scene ended the story on a cliffhanger that Avengers: Endgame is expected to resolve when it arrives in theaters on April 26th, 2019. After that, Hank Pym will hopefully be back in one piece and ready for whatever Ant-Man 3 has in store.
