Michael Chabon To Write Disney’s Magic Kingdom

First there was the news last year that Disney would be making yet another theme park-related movie in Magic Kingdom, with Jon Favreau set to direct. Now THR reports that the family adventure pic will be penned by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon, most recently attached to HBO’s Hobgoblin series. Though script details are being kept under wraps, the story revolves around Disney’s Magic Kingdom where attractions and characters will come to life. Named after Disney‘s flagship park, the story may also include other Disney parks around the world.

With some quiet deal-making going on over the last few months, Disney and Chabon finally came to an agreement earlier this week. Chabon has done a lot of work writing for Disney in the past, including working on Snow White-themed The Order of the Seven and upcoming sci-fi book-to-movie John Carter (formerly John Carter of Mars).

After Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney no doubt has plans to convert more rides/attractions into family-friendly movies; much like the recent board game/toy film adaptations. Has Hollywood simply run out of fresh ideas? I am a fan of Disney but even so I find the idea of Magic Kingdom boring and uninspired, and Night at the Museum has already competently covered the “attractions coming to life” shtick.
