All six trailers have been launched onto the interwebs, the battle lines have been drawn, and Optimus Prime has turned against his former allies – all that’s left now is for Transformers: The Last Knight to release into theaters on June 21st.
Interest levels range from giddy excitement to mild indifference, but in one-last ditch media blowout, director Michael Bay has unveiled a slew of stunning high-res stills for The Last Knight that take you up close and personal with some of the franchise’s key players, including Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager, the returning Captain Lennox (Josh Duhamel), and the harbinger of death himself, Megatron. In fact, as you’ll see in the gallery below, the latter two appear to be holding some form of meeting in the sun-kissed desert. Perhaps it involves a strategy to topple the Autobots? Or something much, much worse?
Whatever the case, this is but a sliver of what The Last Knight has in store, and if you’re curious to see Michael Bay’s sequel in motion, we’ve also included the latest pair of TV spots, one of which sheds light on Optimus Prime as he falls prey to corruption.
Looking beyond The Last Knight and Paramount has already nailed down plans for at least two new entries into the series: a Travis Knight-directed Bumblebee spinoff and Transformers 6, which is still in search of a director to supplant Michael Bay’s place at the helm – that is, assuming that the filmmaker doesn’t pull yet another U-turn and pledge his future to the Transformers franchise. But if TF5 really does signal Bay’s curtain call, he’s leaving the series in a fairly exciting position, even if the box office numbers say otherwise.
Transformers: The Last Knight descends into theatres on June 21st and at least based on early estimates, Michael Bay’s fifth installment in the franchise may struggle to hit the same box office heights of its forebears. The opposite is true for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is now staring down the face of an opening weekend in the region of $100 million, which ought to please Sony executives as they begin formulating their own Marvel Universe – a Marvel Universe independent from the MCU – beginning with the launch of Venom in 2018.
