It’s a Thor: Ragnarok reunion, as Tessa Thompson has agreed to star alongside Chris Hemsworth in Sony’s upcoming Men in Black reboot.
The untitled spinoff, which has supposedly been angled as a Jurassic World-styled revival, also has its crosshairs placed on F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious) to direct, with a screenplay from Matt Holloway and Art Marcum of Iron Man fame. Oh, and it has a release date, too: June 14th, 2019.
Because after a six-year hiatus and talk of a potential crossover with Sony’s Jump Street franchise – a crossover that sounded more and more like a logistical nightmare with each passing story – the Powers That Be have opted for a back-to-basics reboot that will presumably see Hemsworth and Thompson enlist as agents in the titular, super-secret organization.
It’s reportedly much bigger in scope than the original Men in Black movies, too, which played on the buddy-cop trope by way of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith’s at-times effortless chemistry.
As a matter of fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s fresh-faced reboot will also be more of an ensemble piece, so don’t be fooled into thinking that the studio’s casting spree stops and ends at Hemsworth and Thompson – even if their involvement is enough to make us stand up and take notice.
For Thompson, in particular, this is yet another feather in the cap, considering the actress plans to follow her recent performances in Ragnarok and Annihilation with Creed II and the second season of HBO’s Westworld. And that’s before we even factor in Valkyrie’s potential future in the MCU beyond Avengers 4.
Suffice it to say, Men in Black may well be the tip of a very large and exciting cinematic journey for Tessa Thompson. And we’ll be with her every step of the way.
