Oh, I know that as film bloggers we’re supposed to be a little cynical and worldly and all that, but every once in awhile I just want to giggle at ridiculous puns. Hence my admitted excitement for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, the follow up to the surprisingly entertaining Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. In the run-up to the release of the film, there’s a new featurette introducing us to the adorable food/animals things that have been spawned as a result of the machinations from the first film.
The featurette gives us much of what we’ve already seen in the trailers for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2. We pick up exactly 60 seconds following the end of the first film. Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) has to return to his hometown to try and clean up the mess that his machine has caused. He brings his family along with him and discovers that a whole new eco-system has sprung up in the process. In the featurette, we are introduced to a whole slew of so-called foodimals, now living in the food paradise of Chewanswallow Falls. It’s really quite clever: tacodiles, cheesepiders, shrimpanzees, and a family of pickles round out the cast.
Honestly, there’s something gleefully anarchic about the whole idea for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 that really appeals to me. The animation is cute and shiny, and will undoubtedly appeal to the kids. But I somehow dig the very idea of food that has regenerated itself into a new ecosystem. And there’s still that ‘leek in the boat’ joke that keeps getting me each time I watch the trailer.
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 hits theatres September 27.
